Nothing captures the excitement like event photography—and few occasions match the energy of race day at Dover International Speedway. During my time at Delaware Technical Community College, I had the unique opportunity to photograph this legendary venue with an all-access press pass. This experience not only sharpened my skills but also ignited a lasting passion for live event coverage.
One of the most memorable aspects of that assignment was photographing the iconic Miles the Monster, the 46-foot-tall concrete giant that stands guard over the speedway, clutching a race car in one hand, with red eyes glowing against the night sky. Capturing Miles in that moment—poised, powerful, and larger than life—was an unforgettable experience. The image titled “The Monster Awakens” is a favorite from that shoot and a powerful reminder of how event photography can bring scale, atmosphere, and emotion into sharp focus.
What made this shoot exceptional was the venue’senergy: the anticipation in the air, the distant sounds of roaring engines, and the sheer scale of the setting. With an all-access pass, I had the freedom to explore unique angles and perspectives, from the intensity of trackside to quiet, dramatic moments like this nighttime shot of Miles.
This experience taught me that event photography involves more than just documentation—it’s about capturing the heartbeat of an event. It’s the stillness before the storm, the roar of the crowd, and the larger-than-life characters that shape the atmosphere.
