The Front Porch

Yesterday, my sister sent me a photo of a front porch floor. Not the usual kind, you stroll past a worn welcome mat or a sleepy rocking chair, but a stunning, graphic mural underfoot, awash in vibrant colors and playful organic shapes. It’s the kind of porch that makes you stop and smile. The kind that makes you realize you’re witnessing something intentional.

What makes this particular porch special is that the artwork was created by Kristen Medford, a professional photographer based in Savannah, Georgia. Kristen is best known for her evocative portrait and lifestyle photography, capturing the soul of a moment with a natural sense of intimacy and color. Moreover, she’s also a multidisciplinary artist and a Savannah College of Art and Design graduate who brings creative vision to everything she touches, including porch floors.

Her painted porch is a joyful extension of her artistic sensibility. It is bold, rhythmic, and full of personality qualities that resonate throughout her photographic work as well.

It served as a small reminder with a significant message: good design matters.

We often consider art and design luxuries, something we experience in museums, high-end interiors, or printed on gallery walls. But the truth is, design has its deepest impact in our everyday spaces: on sidewalks, front porches, and in the corners of our homes where we sip coffee or kick off our shoes at the end of the day.

What Kristen created isn’t just a beautiful floor; it’s a new way of entering a home. It’s a visual handshake, a conversation starter, and a space that welcomes you with energy and intention.

At Gilliland Design Works, we believe in the power of thoughtful design to elevate the ordinary. Whether it’s a brand identity, a product package, or a porch floor, the principles remain the same: color, shape, rhythm, contrast, and most importantly, emotion.

Design is not just what we see; it’s how we feel in a space, how we remember a moment, and how we carry the energy of one environment into the rest of our day.

So, the next time you pass a porch, ask yourself: What story is it telling? What emotion is it creating?

And maybe, just maybe, you will feel inspired to add a bit of your own color.
