To the Graphic Design Class of 2025:
You did it. The critiques, the all-nighters, the coffee-fueled marathons of layout and type choices—are done. You’ve crossed the stage, shaken hands, and received your diploma. You’re officially a graphic designer.
So… now what?
That question can feel like a weight, especially when the structure of school suddenly falls away. The truth is, there’s no single right path. However, there are plenty of next steps—and just as many ways to define success.
1. You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out
Contrary to what Instagram portfolios and LinkedIn updates might suggest, nobody has it perfectly together right after graduation. Some people land agency jobs right away, while others freelance, dive into passion projects, or pivot into UX, motion, or product design. Some burn out and take a break before coming back. All of it is valid.
You’re not behind. You’re beginning.
2. Make Work—Even If No One’s Paying You Yet
Your best portfolio pieces may not come from paid gigs. Personal projects, speculative branding, zines, passion posters—these all count. If you’re not getting the kind of work you desire, create the kind of work you wish to be hired for. Your taste is your compass, and your creativity doesn’t need permission.
3. Build Relationships, Not Just a Network
Start with your classmates and stay in touch. Celebrate their wins and collaborate. You’re entering a field where relationships matter as much as résumés. Reach out to people you admire, but avoid the generic “Can I pick your brain?” messages. Be genuine. Be kind. Be curious.
4. Learn the Business of Design
Regardless of where you end up, understanding contracts, invoicing, scopes of work, and client management will empower you and provide clarity. Schools often do not teach this. However, your work holds value, and knowing how to protect and price it is essential to becoming a professional.
(And yes, “exposure” is not payment.)
5. Expect Your Voice to Evolve
You are not your student portfolio. That was the beginning. Over time, your aesthetic, values, and design philosophy will evolve. You’ll grow, unlearn, and experiment. You’ll likely cringe at past work—and that’s a good sign. It means you’re leveling up.
6. Stay Curious, Stay Human
Design doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Read widely. Take breaks. Visit museums. Travel if possible. Touch grass. The more you experience the world, the more thoughtful, empathetic, and impactful your design will be.
A Final Word
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. But here’s the secret: no one really knows what they’re doing at first. The creative journey is rarely linear; it zigs and zags, challenging and surprising you. Keep showing up. Keep making. Keep asking “What if?”
You’re not starting over. You’re starting out.
And the world needs your voice.
