In Search of a Face

Every face has a story to tell, and what a wonderful journey it is when we explore that story! ‘In Search of a Face’ began as a simple look at anatomy, but it blossomed into a touching reflection on identity that truly resonates. I crafted four straightforward tiles, each representing a vital feature: an eye, an ear, a nose, and a mouth. While each one might seem a bit plain on its own, when they come together, they start to whisper something deeply human and truly relatable.

Clay gently reveals what it wishes to share when we’re open to listening. Each form softly pushes back, sags, or cracks in ways that feel authentic, gently reminding us that becoming isn’t about controlling everything, but about discovering what’s there. When I take a moment to notice these details, I can’t help but think about how we recognize each other, how memories piece together the familiar from tiny fragments. Sometimes, just a single curve or outline can bring someone’s presence vividly to mind.

This piece continues the Kinetic Becoming journey, an inspiring exploration of transformation, perception, and motion expressed through still forms. While these tiles don’t actually move, they gently suggest the flow of thought: how the mind thoughtfully organizes and redefines what it sees. In a sense, In Search of a Face isn’t just about finding a face; it’s about embracing the beautiful process of becoming one.

Each piece in the Kinetic Becoming series wonderfully celebrates the gentle balance between intention and accident, control and surrender. They come together to form a heartfelt self-portrait, not of specific features or likeness, but of the beautiful journey of evolution itself. Every experiment in clay, movement, and light adds depth to the bigger story of becoming: capturing the spirit of an artist, a maker, and a witness to ongoing transformation.

Artist’s Reflection

This series began as a heartfelt journey into the beauty of individual features. I was genuinely curious to see how each facial part—an eye, an ear, a nose, and a mouth—could stand on its own, separate from the face they usually belong to. When isolated, these features revealed new, captivating meanings. The ear became a holder of stories, the eye a tiny world full of wonder, and the mouth a soft symbol of silence. The nose, with its charming confidence, added a grounding touch to the piece, reminding us of its special presence.

Working with clay always reminds me how much art is about listening. The material speaks its own language of weight, moisture, and resistance. As I shape these qualities, I feel like I’m having a gentle conversation with the clay. Some pieces crack or slump, but I see those imperfections as honest moments, like a pause in a friendly chat. They become a meaningful part of the story.

The title In Search of a Face beautifully captures what this work has blossomed into: it’s no longer just an anatomical exercise, but a touching metaphor for the voyage of becoming. We’re all made up of fragments, memories, experiences, perceptions, and are always reshaping them into something that feels whole. These tiles represent that continued search, not for likeness, but for discovering our true identity.

Within the larger Kinetic Becoming project, this piece gently reflects on recognition and transformation. It encourages us to think about how much of a person we can really see from just one part, and how much of ourselves we discover along the way as we look.
